Target Audience

Beginning Illustrator users. No experience necessary, but if you’ve created a few graphics in Illustrator, you’ll come away from this class with new tips, shortcuts and explanations of not only HOW to do something in Illustrator, but WHY it works the way it does.

Computer skills, using a mouse, some Word, PowerPoint, or other computer program is helpful

Beginning Adobe Illustrator - Essential Adobe Illustrator Skills

Session 1: Understand the Illustrator interface – menus, windows, panels, tools, & customize the workspace

Session 2: Create a new Illustrator document, set up the artboard(s)

Session 3: Navigate around a document – zoom commands and shortcuts, viewing the non printing items on the page

Session 4: Use the Selection and Direct Selection Tools. Use the Select Menu to select similar items

Session 5: Draw Shapes: Ellipse, Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle, Star and Polygon

Session 6: Lines: Arc, line segment and pencil tools to draw straight or curved lines

Session 7: Transform objects with the scale, rotate & reflect tools

Session 8: Group, ungroup, lock and hide objects

Session 9: TEXT: Artistic vs. paragraph text, the two ways to type in text with Type Tool

Session 10: Create outlines from text. Create new font shapes to make a text based logo

Session 11: Character Panel: Font, size, kerning, baseline shift, horizontal & vertical scaling

Session 12: Fill and Stroke Objects: Create a new color, apply to both the fill and/or stroke

Session 13: Load swatches from other documents and saved color libraries to create colors for your project

Session 14: Create new Layers, change the stacking order, move an object from one layer to another, select objects or layers

Session 15: Use Image Trace to turn a JPG (pixels) into Vector Art that is editable.

Session 16: Save as an Illustrator file (.ai), and PDF, Export to JPG or PNG
